Summer on Prince Edward Island

153774099Prince Edward Island, or PEI, is a Canadian province notable for its beautiful beaches. The Island was made famous by author Lucy Maude Montgomery, who used it as a setting for her popular Anne of Green Gables book series. The island is a popular destination for tourists for a variety of reasons. The island is historically important to Canada, as it is known as the “Cradle of Confederation” in reference to the meeting that occurred there between the Fathers of Confederation where they discussed the possibility of uniting several North American British colonies, three years before the formation of Canada. If you’re planning a visit to PEI this summer, here are a few of the events and activities that you’ll want to experience while you’re there.

  • Anne of Green Gables. If you are visiting Prince Edward Island because you’re one of the many fans of the Anne of Green Gables books, you won’t want to miss this summer’s run of Anne of Green Gables – The Musical at the Confederation Centre of the Arts. You can also catch Anne & Gilbert – The Musical at The Guild in Charlottetown. Between musicals, you can enjoy a whole Anne-themed vacation if you’d like. Visit Avonlea Village, tour Lucy Maude Montgomery’s home, visit the Green Gables Heritage Place and shop at the Anne of Green Gables store.

  • Festivals. Prince Edward Island is a terrific place to go if you’re looking for music, festivals and fun. This summer, attend the Island Fusion Festival, scheduled to run from June 13th to July 1st. The Fusion Festival gives you the chance to enjoy local musicians, actors, dancers, and storytellers. The three day Cavendish Beach Festival will take place from July 5th to July 7th. Enjoy famous musical talent like Kenny Chesney and the Dixie Chicks. If you’re interested in Celtic culture and music, check out the three day Highland Gathering at the end of June, and then the Highland Storm Festival, a celebration and showcasing of Celtic music that begins July 2nd and runs until the 29th of August.

  • Food. Anytime is a good time to eat on Prince Edward Island, and summer is no exception. Zagat rated the island the second best foodie getaway in the world, topped only by Okinawa, Japan. On PEI, you can try everything from a casual clambake on the beach to fine dining. Take a Taste the Town walking culinary tour of downtown Charlottetown and experience some of the island’s unique flavors. Try everything from oysters and mussels to chocolate-covered potato chips, and sample local brews as well. You’ll learn about the history and industry of Prince Edward Island along with sampling the food, making it a interesting as well as delicious experience.

 

This summer, spend some time exploring the unique charm of Prince Edward Island. You won’t want to miss the wide variety of things to see and do in this lovely Canadian province.
