Calgary is the largest city of the Canadian province of Alberta, and a popular destination for visitors to Canada. The city has been called the “Gateway to the Rockies,” and it has plenty of interesting attractions and things to see and do. You could easily keep busy for days exploring some of the more popular sites that draw tourists and locals alike. Calgary has an excellent public transportation system, and you can also discover plenty of interesting places to visit by exploring the downtown area on foot. When you’re in Calgary, Alberta, make it a point to stop at the following attractions.
Canada Olympic Park. This spot was the site of the 1988 winter Olympics, which is interesting in and of itself. If you want to spend some of your time in Calgary participating in exciting athletic activities, this is the place to do it. Check out the amazing Skyline Luge, the longest Luge track in the world. The park also offers mountain biking, skating, hockey, mini-golf, and performance training. If you’re traveling with a group, the park offers group passes for some activities that are worth looking into. You’re guaranteed to have a fun and exciting experience when you visit this park.
The Aero Space Museum. Calgary has a number of museums that are worth checking out but if you’re only going to visit one, make it the Aero Space Museum of Calgary. Founded originally in 1960, the Aero Space Museum showcases a fascinating history of flight. The museum has a collection of military aircraft that encompasses World War I, World War II, and beyond, as well as recreational aircraft and helicopters. Admission is a very reasonable $10 for adults and $5 for children under 12, and families can take advantage of the $25 family pass that covers up to two adults and four children.
The Calgary Stampede. If you plan on visiting Calgary in early July, this is an absolute must-do event. The Calgary stampede calls itself, “The Greatest Outdoor Show on Earth”. During the ten day event, you can watch a daily rodeo, catch concerts put on by local and international musicians, and ride rides and play games on a classic carnival midway. There is even a kids’ midway designed specifically with little ones in mind. And of course, there are plenty of edible treats to be found, including items you could only find at a carnival, such as chocolate covered jalapenos, deep fried bubble gum, and chocolate bacon fudge. Tickets are available for individual shows and events, or in packages that admit you to several different events.
While you’re in Calgary, you should also remember to stop by the Calgary Tower to catch a gorgeous view of the entire city. That may help you decide where you want to go next!
